Alex's Story

Hello, my name is Alex, and I only recently join 2BU.

When I was fifteen I first really started to think about my sexuality, as for me trying to just get through school was the only thing on my mind. Sexual education never really covered anything but heterosexuality, and it made me assume that as that was what was ‘normal’, and that anyone who was gay was strange and abnormal. This just made the whole situation far worse than it should have been.

Eventually, after I had come to terms with being gay within myself, I told my best friend. After convincing him I was not joking, he supported me, and still does. Later that year I then came out to my parents…

Its true when they say there is no tried and tested method for it, and eventually I was so scared and depressed about the whole situation, my parents were brought into school, and the whole situation was explained to them.

Turns out they had already guessed, and were trying to find a way to ask me… funny old world. Both my mum and my dad were very accepting, and did everything that they could to help. ‘Coming out’ to my parents was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life, and yet it was also the most rewarding.

One of the things my parents and I talked about was youth groups. We found 2BU, and next thing I know, here I am.

2BU is brilliant, and it helped me to understand that I was not the only person going through this situation by meeting other people who are having / have been through the same problem.

For anyone thinking of joining, I can tell you now that it will be the best decision that you ever make.
