Celebrate Love!

February is the month of Valentine’s Day, a day centred around the celebration of romance and love but it’s important to recognise that love and romantic attraction is not a one-size-fits-all and valentines looks different for everybody. The first week following Valentine’s Day marks Aromantic Spectrum Week - an annual, international event meant to spread awareness and acceptance of aromantic spectrum identities.

The aromantic spectrum has a wide range of romantic orientations, from those who experience no romantic attraction, to those who might experience romantic attraction but in different ways or to different extents than others. Aromanticism is a spectrum, it is not a ‘lack’ of attraction but a valid and diverse spectrum of identities.

Valentine’s Day is often seen as a romantic celebration which can create feelings of exclusion or discomfort for those that don’t experience this form of attraction however it is also a celebration of love and love can include love for family, love for friends and love for our community. It is a time where you can celebrate all forms of love from platonic love to self-love and more.

To learn more about Aromantic Spectrum Awareness week, visit the official website: https://www.arospecweek.org/ where you can find information on the week itself and more about aromanticism.
